Museum of the Fur Trade

native american artifacts, museum of the fur trade

The Museum of the Fur Trade chronicles and commemorates the first continent-wide economy of North America. The extensive collection at the Museum illustrates the fur trade lifestyle and the business of furs, involving Indians, fur traders, and trappers. It comprises of clothing, weapons, the materials and goods traded in establishments like this across the continent. The main highlights of this collection include Kit Carson’s shotgun, William Clark fabric samples, Green Garson’s Bells, and the earliest “point blanket”. Besides, the collection also features Indian ceremonial garments fashioned from European cloth and British buttons. One of the most impressive exhibits at the Museum is the “Buffalo Tongue”, a northern plains delicacy in the pioneer days.

The Museum of the Fur Trade was established in 1949, adjacent to the site of a warehouse and trading post built along the Bordeaux Creek in 1833. Also, there are other exhibits that illustrate the life of Alexander Mackenzie, the first white man to cross the North American continent. The Museum also houses an elegant gift shop. Museum of Fur Trade Quarterly, the scholarly journal of the museum, presents a number of articles on the significance of ostrich plumes to fur trade feather merchants. This Museum is a great learning experience. At present, the Museum attracts thousands of visitors from Italy, Romania, and Bulgaria annually.
