Omaha, the largest city in Nebraska, is situated on the eastern edge of the state, nearly 20 miles (30 km) north of the mouth of Platte River. In the late 1800s, Omaha was a transportation hub for the United States and was nicknamed as the “Gateway City of the West”. Today, this city is best known for its rich cultural background. The major cultural attractions in the city include the Joslyn Art Museum, the Holland Performing Arts Center, the Durham Western Heritage Museum, and the Omaha Community Playhouse. The city is also home to the headquarters of Berkshire Hathaway, Valmont industries, and the Union Pacific Railroad.
The City of Omaha is divided into 5 major areas-Midtown, Downtown, West Omaha, South Omaha, and North Omaha. Omaha also has dozens of regionally, locally, and nationally significant landmarks. Over 100 individual properties in the city are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Holy Family Church, the Bank of Florence, the Joslyn Castle, and the Christian Specht Building. The major historic districts in the city include the Gold Coast Historic District, the Jobbers Canyon Historic District, the South Omaha Main Street Historic District, Omaha Quartermaster Depot Historic District, and the Fort Omaha Historic District.
The other places of tourist interest in the city include the Omaha Botanical Gardens, the Kenefick Park, Old Market, the Henry Doorly Zoo, and Love’s Jazz & Art Center. Omaha is also well known for its music. Besides, the parks and recreation department of the city manages 6 regional parks, including the Gene Leahy Mall, the Dodge Park, Miller Park, and Hanscom Park. The City of Omaha also has over 80 miles (130 km) of trails for hikers, bicyclists, and pedestrians. The two major trails in the city include the American discovery Trail that traverses the entire US, and the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail that runs westward from Omaha, in 11 western states. Omaha is rich in natural beauty, cultural heritage, history, and recreation. It is a perfect holiday destination and is well-worth visiting.
