The largest man-made lake spread over a massive area of over 1.5 million acres, Lake Mead is a tourist’s delight. Named after Dr. Elwood Mead who served as the U.S. Reclamation Commissioner during 1924-1936, Lake Mead was formed by the construction of the acclaimed Hoover Dam. Lake Mead National Recreation Area was formally inaugurated on October 8, 1964, thus opening up a beautiful world to the public. Lake Mead receives almost its entire water resource from the melted snow of Utah, Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico.
For everyone who loves water and water sports, Lake Mead is a wonderful place to go swimming, boating, water skiing, canoe & kayak and fishing. It’s also a perfect location for sunbathers who will relish every bit of the warm sunshine. For those who want to enjoy the desert land in which this lake is situated, there is ample scope to go hiking, sightseeing and of course click away some pictures of the amazing desert land inhabited by unique desert plants and animals all surviving the scorching sun. Bighorn sheep, kit foxes, mule deer and coyotes are some of the rare species of animals that live here. The endangered desert tortoise and peregrine falcon as well as a large number of bird species are exclusive to this region.
