Located in Overton, Nevada and about 60 miles from Las Vegas, the Lost City Museum of Archaeology holds a collection of artifacts that have great historical importance.
A mirror to the prehistoric Anasazi culture and other ancient backgrounds that is believed to have once colonized Moapa Valley, the Lost City Museum of Archaeology has a magnificent assortment of pottery, chipped stoned tools, jewelry and other artifacts excavated in the early 20th century in its exhibits. The museum brings to life Anasazi Indian life through reconstructed structures built on an actual Anasazi pueblo that existed many centuries ago. There are also petroglyphs estimated to be over 3,000 years old.
Anasazi pottery is distinctive on account of the method involved and the exquisite designs found. Manufactured by the “coil method” without the use of a potter’s wheel there is certain uniqueness about each piece.
Presently owned and run by the State of Nevada, the Lost City Museum of Archaeology is one of the six state museums preserved by the state government. The museum encourages archeological research activities and has variety of programs to educate public, especially children through school tours and outreach programs. Other events are organized by the museum from time to time, which are both educative and engaging. A gift shop in the museum premises sells copies of the exhibits and also handicrafts of the present day local Indians.
The Lost City Museum of Archaeology is an exciting way to explore the past.
