Red Rock Canyon

red rock canyon

Las Vegas is not just about man made glitz, glamour and entertainment venues, but also about one of the worlds most awe inspiring natural wonders. About 15 miles (24 Kilometers) to the west of downtown Las Vegas is the beautiful natural formation known as the Red Rock Canyon which derives its name from the red colored sandstone structures spread throughout the region.

Red Rock is a prominent centre for geologists from across the globe and houses some rare wonders. Keystone Thrust Fault is considered to be the most important geologic facet of the Red Rock Canyon and is estimated to be formed over 65 million years ago. It is believed that a fracture was formed on the earth's crust when two rock plates collided with each other and a part of one plate was thrust over juvenile sandstones now called the Keystone Thrust Fault.

To most visitors the Red Rock Canyon is synonymous with the Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center run by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Established to educate people about this significant location, the visitor center is equipped with multi-media exhibits depicting the geographical evolution of Red Rock and also has a Desert Tortoise Habitat preserving the endangered species. A book and gift store operated in the premises offers some unique memorabilia.

Red Roc Canyon has a great deal to offer visitors and some of the popular leisure activities include picnicking, hiking, climbing and biking. A scenic drive however is extremely popular and is greatly recommended as one can enjoy the beauty of this vast region and capture some stunning pictures.
