Fourth Ward School

fourth ward school

If you are a history buff, you should not miss the magnificent Fourth Ward School in Virginia City. This old schoolhouse was established in 1876 in order to impart education to the Comstock students in a fine modern building. It was a combination grammar and high school that accommodated nearly 1,025 students. However, the school was closed after a new school, constructed by the Works Progress Administration, started to function.

Fourth Ward School is, no doubt, a prominent landmark in the city. It is situated at the southern entrance to Virginia City, near the Gold Hill-Virginia City boundary. The building, constructed in the Second Empire Architectural Style, was designed by the famous architect, S. M. Bennet. This old schoolhouse was known for its giant classrooms, a modern central heating system, elevator, and modern, clean bathrooms. The latest Philadelphia style patented spring-loaded self-flushing toilets used to be the main feature of Fourth Ward.

The building has been completely renovated and at present, it functions as a gallery, meeting place, and a museum for the city. The Fourth Ward School museum features several exhibits and interpretive displays that depict the Comstock history. The old furnishings and the blackboards are still intact in this interesting four-storey building. One can also see on one of the blackboards, the autographs of the last batch that graduated from this school in 1936.

Fourth Ward School was a matter of pride for the miners of Virginia City. It was, in other words, a centenary gift to the children of Comstock and to the Country.
