The Luxor Hotel, situated on the southern end of the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada, is the city’s first fully themed mega-resorts. This hotel and casino has an Ancient Egyptian motif and features 4, 408 rooms lining the interior walls of a 30-story hollow pyramid, which measures nearly 350 ft (106.68m) in length. It has been designed by an internationally acclaimed hotel architect, Veldon Simpson. It has been named after the city of Luxor in Egypt, home to the Valley of the Kings, Luxor Temples, and Karnak.
In 2007, the ancient Egyptian theme of the hotel was replaced to a great extent with modern, adult-oriented lounges, clubs, and restaurants. Inaugurated on October 15, 1993, Luxor is flanked by the Excalibur to the north and the Mandalay Bay to the south. All these three properties were constructed by Circus Circus Enterprises and are connected by local trams and free express. Luxor has been the venue of some of the most popular entertainment attractions in the Las Vegas. The striking design of Luxor has made it the most recognizable hotels on the Strip. The fixed position spotlight at the tip of the pyramid is considered to be the brightest beam in the world.
The guest rooms in the hotel can be accessed by riding in the ‘inclinators’. The hallways leading to the rooms overlook the atrium, the largest of its kind in the world. The major attractions at Luxor include an IMAX Theater, the IMAX motion simulator ride, and the Atrium Showroom. The King Tut Museum is an authentic reproduction of the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamen. Luxor is considered to be the finest examples of 1900s Post-modern architecture.
