Albuquerque Museum of Art & History

front of albuquerque museum of art and history

The Albuquerque Museum of Art & History is situated in Old Town Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Museum features a number of regional, local, national, and international exhibitions that focus mainly on art and history. It encompasses an area of over 40, 000 sq-ft (3716 sq-m), and is home to the nation’s largest collection of Spanish-colonial artifacts and relics of the birth and development of the City. The most impressive features of the colonial exhibit are the two life-size models of Spanish conquistadors in the authentic chain mail and armor. The one on horseback is Francisco Vasquez de Coronado, who led an army into New Mexico in 1540, in search of gold.

The Museum also houses a number of religious artifacts, early maps, and treasure chests filled with gold coins and pearls. Some of maps displayed in the Museum date back to the 15th century when California was an island! The development of the city since 1875 is illustrated by an impressive multimedia presentation. The major attraction in the Museum is its Sculpture Garden, which features more than 50 works by the southwestern artists of the 20th century. Some of these artists include Michael Naranjo, Luis Jimenez, and Glenna Goodacre. Free tours to the Garden are offered mid-April through mid-October.

Another attraction in the Museum is the beautiful Tiguex Park. This tree shaded, lush plot hosts a number of arts and crafts fairs and concerts every year. In addition, the Museum also features a number of traveling exhibits from all over the world. Children and adult workshops are also organized throughout the year. The Albuquerque Museum of Art & History is a great learning experience and worth a visit, especially with kids.
