American International Rattlesnake Museum

gila monster at american international rattlesnake museum

The American International Rattlesnake Museum, situated in Old Town Albuquerque, New Mexico, is dedicated to a variety of snakes, especially rattlesnakes. It was inaugurated on May 5, 1990, and is also known as “Snako-de-Mayo”. It houses world’s largest collection of different species of live rattlesnakes. Rare species of snakes from Central, North, and South America are featured in wonderfully recreated habitats. The Museum, with its collection of 34 distinct species of rattlesnakes, boasts of having more different species than the National Zoo, the Bronx Zoo, the Denver Zoo, the Philadelphia Zoo, the San Diego Zoo, and the San Francisco Zoo, all combined together. The Museum is also home to a live ‘Gila Monster’.

Besides, the Museum features a unique collection of snake-related artifacts, artwork, and memorabilia. These artifacts and exhibits illustrate a number of ways in which rattlesnakes, the “less desirable” species, influence our lives. The main exhibits include collections of toys, games, jewelry, ceramics and glassware, and clothing & apparel. The Museum also runs a gift shop in the Museum campus. This elegant gift shop features authentic Old Town wares like pottery, jewelry, and Rattlesnake Museum T-shirts. It also sells rattlesnake fangs and skin, shot glasses, mugs, thermal mugs, posters, coolers, stickers, postcards, key-rings, magnets, and caps.

The American International Rattlesnake Museum is a member of several organizations such as the Albuquerque Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce. It hosts nearly 50,000 visitors every year. This animal conservation museum is an exciting educational experience for the entire family. It is the best place to explore the common myths about snakes, cure snake-phobias, and reveal several fascinating mysteries.
