The KiMo Theater, situated in downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico, is the best-known landmark in the city. This magnificent theater was established in 1927 by entrepreneur Oreste Bachechi. It was designed by the famous architect, Carl Boller. This three-storey stucco building has the characteristic Native Pueblo architecture with recessed spandrels and vertical thrust of American Art Deco skyscrapers. A variety of indigenous decorative motifs has been incorporated in both, the exterior and the interior of the building. A row of beautiful terra cotta shields decorate the third-floor windows. This extravagant theater is, no doubt, an architectural gem. It has also been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The word ‘KiMo’ means the “King of its Kind”. The KiMo Theater was named by Iseta Pueblo Governor, Pablo Abeita. At present, the Theater is owned by the City of Albuquerque and managed by the Cultural Services Department. Free self-guided tours are offered to the public. The Theater attracts several hundreds of visitors every year.
This historic theater, well known for its popular Von Hassler murals and the elaborate Pueblo Indian ornamentation, hosts a wide variety of national, local, and international events. The KiMo Stage features dance, drama, comedy, films, performance art, multimedia events, and several other unique performances. Besides, the Theater can also be rented for movie screenings, performing arts event, private functions, and business meetings. The KiMo also houses a large exhibit space that presents artwork by several contemporary visual artists. According to a popular belief, the KiMo Theater is haunted by the ghost of Bobby Darnall, a 6 yr old boy, who was killed in 1951 when a water heater exploded in the theater’s lobby. Many people claim to have seen his ghost, clad in a stripped shirt and jeans. A space for gifts and offerings is maintained in a backstage stairwell in order to appease the spirit.
