The Maxwell Museum of Anthropology is situated on the main campus of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This anthropology museum was inaugurated in 1932 and was the first public museum in Albuquerque. It was named after the famous philanthropists, Dorothy and Gilbert Maxwell. The Museum houses a number of changing exhibits that emphasize on several cultures around the world.
Besides, the Museum also holds two permanent exhibits namely the Ancestors Exhibit and the People of the Southwest Exhibit. The former is an impressive exhibit on human evolution while the latter illustrates 11,000 years of cultural heritage of the American Southwest. The ‘People of the Southwest’ Exhibit also features a wonderfully reconstructed room at Chaco Canyon. The Museum also hosts a number of educational programs, guided tours, annual children’s summer camp, and lecture series. The Museum shop specialties include pottery, jewelry, books on archaeology & anthropology, and Zuni fetish carvings. The Maxwell Museum of Anthropology is one of the finest museums in the nation and a great learning experience.
