fat man reproduction at NAM

The National Atomic Museum is situated at Mountain Road NW, just north of Old Town in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This Congressionally chartered official Atomic Museum aims at presenting various applications of nuclear energy and the history of the pioneers of this field through its permanent and changing exhibits. This Museum was established in the year 1969. The Atomic Museum is a fascinating place to discover the story of the atomic age, from early research through today’s peaceful uses of nuclear technology.

The permanent displays and changing exhibits at the Museum illustrate history as well as future development of nuclear energy. The Museum houses a number of impressive exhibits on Radiation in the World, Nuclear Medicine and Nuclear Pioneers like Albert Einstein, Marie Curie, and Lise Meitner. The other main exhibits emphasize on topics such as the Manhattan project, WW II, the Cold War, and the history of Arms Control. The Museum is also home to the popular Little Al’s Lab, where young inquisitive minds are allowed to try their hand at a number of science activities. The major attractions in the Museum are the replicas of the Little Boy and Fat Man, world’s first two atomic weapons, built and used at the end of WW II.

A number of other facilities are provided by the Museum. These include the traveling exhibits, photograph displays, ‘Science is Everywhere’ Summer Science Camp, the Facility Rental Program, scientific tour series, and the educational outreach program, the ‘Up ‘n’ Atom. The Museum also runs a gift shop. There are three additional museums within walking distance from the National Atomic museum. These museums are: the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, the Explora Children’s Museum, and the Albuquerque Museum. The National Atomic Museum is a great learning experience and is worth a visit at least once.
