The Petroglyph National Monument is situated in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It extends up to 17 miles (27 km) along West Mesa, a volcanic basalt escarpment on the western horizon of the city. The monument was built in 1990 and at present, it is managed by the City of Albuquerque and the National park Service. It encompasses an area of 7236 acres (29.31 sq. km.). This Monument conserves a number of cultural and natural resources including hundreds of archaeological sites, 5 volcanic cones, and over 25,000 images carved by early Spanish settlers and native people. These complex images of people, animals, brands, and crosses are the cultural heritage of this nation and are inseparable from the spirits of the people who created them, and those who appreciate them.

The Visitor Center of Petroglyph National Monument was formerly the home of Dr. Sophie Aberle, the first practicing anthropologist in the United States. The National Monument is rich in cultural resources but it has lot more to offer. This narrow corridor is used by various types of wildlife, either for the entire lifespan or during migration. The ecosystem that Petroglyph holds in this part of land comprises of a variety of birds, plants, animals, and insects. The most common inhabitant of this area is the Rattlesnake.

Petroglyph National Monument mainly comprises of the remnants of volcanoes that produced the basalt. It was this basalt that served as the canvas for people several thousands of years ago. This magnificent Monument can be accessed by a moderate hike. However, it is advisable to stay only on the marked trails in order to prevent any sort of damage. Collecting plants, flowers, artifacts, rocks, etc. from this area is strictly prohibited.
