The Rio Grande Zoological Park, situated in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is a part of the famous Albuquerque BioPark. It was founded in the year 1927. At present, the Zoo is home to a collection of over 1,000 species of birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians from all over the world. It encompasses an area of nearly 64 acres (0.26 sq-km) and the walking distance through the Zoo is not more than 2.27 miles (3.65 km). A 36’’ narrow-gauge railroad connects this Zoo to the other three facilities of the BioPark.
The Rio Grande Zoo houses nearly 250 species of native and exotic animals. The most common species in the Zoo include polar bears, seals, sea lions, orangutans, gorillas, chimpanzees, giraffes, elephants, tamarins, koalas, Mexican wolves, jaguars, hippos, rhinoceros, and zebras. Impressive landscaping and world-class exhibit design enhance zoo animal husbandry by providing naturalistic habitats complete with grasses, water features, trees, and rockwork.
The main collections and sights at the Zoo include “Cat Walk”, Herpetarium, Adventure Africa, Inukshuk Bay, Koala Creek, Waterfowl, Rapter Roost, Tropical America, and an Australia exhibit area. Besides, the Zoo also hosts a number of special programs such as ‘Zoo-to-You Outreach’ and the ‘BioVan outreach’. Other cultural events include the Zoo Music concert series and an annual Mother’s Day Concert. The Rio Grande Zoological Park is a great learning experience, especially for kids.
