San Felipe de Neri Church

san felipe de neri church

San Felipe de Neri Church, situated in Old Town Plaza in downtown Albuquerque, is an active parish church that features an amazing combination of the new and old building traditions of New Mexico. The Church has offered pastoral, educational, and liturgical services to the visitors and parishioners for over 300 years. The spiritual heart is still beating strong and the Church is actively involved in serving the society even today. The de Neri Church was established in the year 1793 and is the oldest surviving building in the city of Albuquerque. The present church building replaced the old mission church built in 1706.

Initially, the church was named by Don Francisco Cuervo y Valdez as San Francisco Xavier, in honor of the Viceroy of New Spain. However, the church was later renamed by the Duke of Albuquerque as San Felipe, after the King Philip of Spain. At present, the church complex comprises of the historic towers established in 1861; a convent constructed in 1881 for the Sisters of Charity; and a Parish school built in 1878. The adobe church is designed in the classical colonial style with mixtures of 18th and 19th century decorative and building elements and Spanish overtones. The main features of the church building include a stamped metal ceiling, wood paneled wainscoting, plaster walls painted to resemble marble, and an elaborate altar. This magnificent, historic Catholic Church has also been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
