The University of New Mexico Art Museum, situated within the Center for the Arts building on the main campus of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, was established in the year 1963. The Museum aims at educating people through art, directly supporting the academic programs of the UNM, enriching the cultural life of the state, and making a significant contribution to the international scholarly community. At present, the Art Museum houses a permanent collection that comprises of nearly 30,000 objects like drawings, paintings, photographs, prints, and sculpture. In fact, this collection is considered to be the best and the largest fine art collection in the entire nation. This collection comprises of over 10,000 photographs, from early daguerreotypes to modern-day digital images. Besides, it also features nearly 17,000 examples of the entire history of fine art printmaking.

The Museum also houses an extensive collection of 19th century painting and sculpture, from both United States and Europe. Fine art works by European artists like Picasso, Kandinsky, Schimdt-Rotluff, and Picabia are also a main highlight in the Art Museum. Other main collections at the Museum include the Art since 1950, the Mary Lester Field and Neill B. Field Collection, the Tamarind Archive Collection, the Beaumont Newhall Collection, the Theodore J. Lab hard Collection, the Albert A. Anella Collection, the Clinton and Mary Adams Collection, and the Jerome Bowers Peterson Memorial Collection.

Regular educational programs, gallery talks, lectures, symposia, and docent tours are also organized throughout the year. Also, printed gallery guides and catalogs are made available to the visitors. Ample parking space is also provided to the east of the center. Various K-12 programs offered by the UNM Art Museum include self-guided visits for school groups, Evenings for Educators, high school internship opportunities, and programs for professional development.
