The Blumenschein Home and Museum was formerly the permanent house of Ernest L. Blumenschein and his family. Blumenschein and Bert G. Philips, who accidentally arrived in Taos in 1898, played a significant role in establishing the Taos Society of Artists. The main mission of this society was to promote the art of the American West and the magnificence of Taos. The spectacular Blumenschein Home was bought by Blumenschein’s wife, Mary Greene Blumenschein, and his daughter, Helen in 1919.
Blumenschein Home is the only house of a member of the Society that is open to the public. It has as many as 13 rooms and it dates back to 1797. This beautiful house, now turned into a Museum, depicts the lifestyle of the Taos artists in the first half of the 20th century. It houses a unique collection of Blumenschein family’s personal possessions, fine European and Spanish Colonial style antiques, and the family’s art work. This art work represents works by other popular first artists in Taos. The House and Museum also features an extensive collection of regional New Mexican furniture.
The Museum also operates an elegant gift shop. This shop is filled with prints, art books, and original artwork. The Museum is maintained exactly as it was when the famous artist and his family lived here. It is certainly worth a visit if you are really interested in exploring and understanding Taos art and culture.
