The Harwood Museum of Art, situated in Taos, New Mexico, is the state’s second oldest art museum. It was established in the year 1923 as a non-profit organization by Elizabeth Harwood, joined by Victor Higgins and Bert G. Phillips of the Taos Society of Artists, in honor of her late husband, Burt Harwood. At present, it is managed and operated by the University of New Mexico. The main aim of the Museum is to promote and preserve the centuries-old tradition of the arts in Taos. Harwood Museum is located within walking distance of the famous Taos Plaza. The main exhibition building of the Museum, designed by architect John Gaw Meem, is the earliest and the best example of the Pueblo Revival Style.
The major attraction in the Museum is the Hispanic Traditions Gallery. This permanent exhibition features a fabulous collection of retablos contributed by Mabel Dodge Luhan. It also holds the largest collection of sculptures donated by Patrocino Barela. Some galleries in the Museum are dedicated to the Taos Society of Artists. These galleries include major works by Victor Huggins, Ernest Blumenschein, and American modernists such as Marsden Hartley and John Marin. Galleries of Mid-20th Century Art and Late-20th Century Art, on the other hand, display contemporary works by Taos Moderns and much later works by Ken Price and Larry Bell. Yet another attraction is the Agnes Martin Gallery that features an extraordinary installation of his seven internationally acclaimed paintings.
Besides, the Museum also offers a number of changing exhibits, docent tours, lectures, and an elegant Museum Shop. The Shop contains an eclectic collection of books and unique gifts like jewelry, ceramics, clothing, artwork, posters, pottery, and textiles. To conclude, the Harwood Museum of Art collection offers a unique record of the artistic convergence of the Native American and the Hispanic Cultures, from its beginnings to the present day.
