Roswell Museum and Art Center

The Roswell Museum and Art Center, situated in downtown Roswell, New Mexico, aims at enhancing the creativity, discovery, and cultural understanding of the history and art of the American Southwest and beyond. The 2 main landmarks adjacent to the Museum are the Roswell Convention and Civic Center. The Museum and Art Center holds a unique collection of 71 watercolor sketches by Peter Moran. These sketches date back to the 1880s and illustrate the lifestyle of the Pueblo Indians. The Museum also houses an international 16th century print collection, which includes works by Pablo Picasso, Fritz Scholder, Alex Katz, Louise Nevelson, Georges Roualt, Robert Indiana, Eugene Delacroix, Albrecht Durer, and Salvador Dali.
Another impressive collection at the Museum is the Portfolio of Spanish Colonial Design. This prized collection of wood lock prints was produced by E. Boyd as a part of the Federal Art Project. One can also find in the Museum, the most significant and the largest public collection of important regionalists like Peter Hurd and Henriette Wyeth. This collection reflects the culture and traditions of the Hondo Valley in southeastern New Mexico. Other important collections include extraordinary early modernist works from the Taos and Santa Fe art colonies; works by WPA muralist and Taos artist, Howard Cook; contemporary fine arts from artists like Ken Little, Agnes Martin, etc.; as well as the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program.
The Roswell Museum and Art Center also operates the popular Robert H. Goddard Planetarium in collaboration with the Roswell Independent School District. This 120 seat planetarium features multi-media presentations, star shows, and hands-on-activities for families and children, which help to understand and explore the changing universe and the impact of space science on our daily lives. Star Parties are frequently hosted at the Planetarium by the Roswell Astronomy Club. The Museum Store offers a wide range of books on folk and fine art, Robert H. Goddard, Southwest cuisine, space, Southwest plants and gardening, and Southwest architecture. Besides, the Store also sells note cards, calendars, fine art prints and posters, CDs by American Indian and Mexican artists, and unique gift items.
