Taos Plaza

The Taos Plaza, the heart of the Town of Taos, is the main center of shops and monuments in the city. The Plaza offers relief from busy lifestyles and activities. It is a great place to renew old friendships, make new friends, and enjoy the culture. Live performances, fund raising efforts, and traditional celebrations are organized quite frequently in this lovely town square.
The Plaza dates back to the late 1700s when the Governor of New Mexico, Don Fernando de Chacon issued the Taos Land Grant in 1976 to the settlers from the Taos Pueblo. Since then, Taos Plaza has served as the central meeting place in the valley. The main landmark nearby is the home of Charles Bent. At present, the Taos Plaza is a popular tourist destination. It features a number of shops and galleries that display Northern New Mexico’s cultural items and foods. Besides, Taos Plaza is also famous as the first place in the United States, by tradition, to fly the United States Flag both day and night.
