Roswell, situated in the southeastern quarter of New Mexico, is the county seat of the Chaves County. Home of the famous New Mexico Military Institute, Roswell is also the main center for dairying, manufacturing, ranching, irrigation farming, and petroleum production. A major tourist attraction nearby is the Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge, situated to the northeast, on the Pecos River. The city was named in 1871 after Roswell Smith, father of Van C. Smith. The two buildings that were initially constructed by Smith and Aaron in 1869 served mainly as the community post office and general store.
Roswell is also popular because of its name attached to the famous 1947 Roswell UFO incident. This incident took place closer to the town of Corona, 75 miles (120.7 km) from Roswell. The debris recovery from the accident site was handled by the Roswell Army Air Field. The city of Roswell was also named as an “All-American city” in the year 2002.
Roswell is also known for the early rocketry work done by Robert H. Goddard. The major work done by Goddard was in the science of liquid propelled rockets. This City was also home to many other famous personalities such as John Denver, Demi Moore, Nancy Lopez, Mike E. Smith, Lewis Lloyd, and Roger Staubach.
