Taos, situated in the Taos County in north-central New Mexico, was founded following the Spanish conquest of the Pueblo villages. The Town of Taos, as it calls itself, is nestled close to Taos Pueblo and has been named after the famous Native American village and tribe. The town is also known for the mysterious Taos Hum, a noise whose source is not known. Today, Taos, situated at an elevation of 6950 ft (2118 m), has become a major tourist destination in the Southwest.

The town is known world-wide for world-class skiing and dining. A major point of interest is the San Francisco de Asis Church, situated to the south of the town in Ranchos de Taos. Taos is also famous for the ‘Taos art colony’. A number of artists’ studios such as the Blumenschein House have been preserved in this area. Other major tourist attractions in the town include the Taos Ski Valley, the Rio Grande Gorge, and the magnificent homes of Governor Charles Bent, Kit Carson, and Mabel Dodge Luhan.
The famous D. H. Lawrence Ranch, home of the English novelist, D. H. Lawrence, is situated just 20 miles (32 km) northwest of the town and is well-frequented by the tourists. At present, this house is owned and managed by the University of New Mexico. Another point of interest is the Martinez Hacienda, situated in Ranchitos, just outside Taos. ‘Martinez Hacienda’ is the house turned museum of the late Padre Antonio Jose Martinez.
