The White Sands National Monument, situated nearly 25 miles (40.2 km) southwest of Alamogordo, New Mexico, was established on 18 January, 1933 by President Herbert Hoover. This U.S. National Monument is located within the Tularosa Basin Valley, at an elevation of about 4235 ft (1290.8m). The area encompasses the entire southern portion of a 710 sq-km (274.1 sq-miles) field of white sand dunes made of gypsum crystals. This field lies within the White Sands Missile Range and can be accessed via Route 70.
The spectacular white sand dunes in this area are mainly made of selenite crystals that break into sand-size grains due to erosion and are carried away by the prevailing winds from the southwest. These selenite crystals are mainly found in a large flat area in the Park called the Alkali Flat. Besides, they are also found along the famous Lake Lucero, which lies at the southwest corner of the Park. The sand dunes gradually move downwind and change shape constantly.
The Visitor Center is located right at the entrance of the Park. From the entrance, the dunes can be reached via the scenic, 8 mile (12.8 km) Dunes Drive. One can also choose to explore the dunes by foot, following any one of the four marked trails. As the dunes are made of gypsum, they can be walked upon safely with bare feet, even in the hottest summer months. These dunes are also used frequently by children for downhill sledding.
The Park also organizes Ranger-guided orientation and nature walks during the summer season. Also, the Park also has active participation in the Junior Ranger Program, with a number of age-group specific activities. The Park and U. S. Route 70 are closed when tests are conducted in the White Sands Missile Range. The nearest landmark is the Trinity Site, located on the northernmost boundaries of White Sands Missile Range.
