El Rancho de las Golondrinas, located in a rural farming valley to the south of Santa Fe, New Mexico, is a living history museum dedicated to the culture and heritage of Spanish Colonial New Mexico. This museum was established in the year 1972. The site encompasses an area of nearly 200 acres (0.81 sq-km) and features an old mountain village, wheelwright and blacksmith shops, threshing grounds, working water mills, a Penitente meeting house, and a schoolhouse. Most of the original colonial buildings on the site date back to the early 18th century. Besides, many historic buildings from other parts of northern New Mexico have also been restructured at Las Golondrinas.
The magnificent Museum features the original setting of one of the most historic Spanish Colonial ranches of the Southwest. The Museum also holds several unique collections that include material cultural objects from Mexican, colonial, Territorial, and early statehood periods. The lifestyle of early New Mexico is illustrated by villagers clothed in the styles of those times. Also, theme weekends and special festivals organized at Las Golondrinas provide an in-depth look into the celebrations, dance, music, and many other facets of life in the period when this area was ruled by Mexico and Spain.
