The Georgia O’Keefe Museum, situated in Santa Fe, New Mexico, was founded in the year 1995 by philanthropists Anne and John Marion. However, the Museum was open to the public only on July, 1997. This Museum is one of the most popular art museums in New Mexico and is housed in a spacious building constructed in the Pueblo Revival-style. This magnificent building is situated just 2 blocks from the historic Santa Fe Plaza. This Museum, named after Georgia O’Keeffe, the most significant artist of the 20th century, is the most frequented museum in the state and is, in fact, the first museum that is devoted to a single women artist. Over 1, 80,000 visitors from all over the world visit the Museum annually.

The permanent collection at the Museum comprises of a total of 2,990 works. The Museum holds the world’s largest O’Keeffe collection. This unique collection comprises of over 1148 O’Keeffe’s painting, sculpture, and drawings. Besides, it also includes extended loans and promised gifts. Images by O’Keeffe include large scale flowers, animal bones, cityscapes, dramatic cliffs, and high deserts of New Mexico.

The special exhibitions at the Museum are either dedicated to the work of Georgia O’Keeffe or to the extraordinary art that combines her art with works by her American modernist contemporaries, such as Marsden Hartley, Jackson Pollock, Arthur Dove, and Helen Frankenthaler. The exhibitions at the Museum give the visitors an opportunity to explore and understand the period of American modernism.

The Museum also operates the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Research Center. Established in July 2001, this Center is the world’s only museum-related research facility devoted to the study of American Modernism. The Research Center also sponsors many researches in the fields of architectural history and design, music, photography, literature, and art history. Besides, it also awards six scholarships annually to scholars from the most prestigious universities of the nation.

Other main features of the Museum include the elegant Museum shop and the O’Keeffe Café. The former holds a wide range of merchandise like catalogues, postcards, glass and ceramic pieces, books, jewelry, and other gift items. The Café, situated to the west of the Museum, serves fresh, seasonal, simple dishes. In addition, an audio tour guide is also made available to the visitors.
