The Institute of American Indian Arts Museum, situated in downtown Santa Fe, New Mexico, is an internationally acclaimed showcase for contemporary art of the Alaska Natives, Native Americans, and the Canadian First Nations. The Museum features an exhibition area of nearly 4,000 sq-ft (371.6 square-meters) and an expansive sculpture garden. The permanent collection at the Museum comprises of over 7,000 pieces of contemporary Native American Art. The IAIA also offers prominent touring exhibitions of fine art by the Indigenous people from across the globe, especially from the Pacific and North America. Most of the Museum’s exhibitions have been reviewed in the leading international art journals.
The IAIA Museum was established in 1971 by the Institute of American Indian Arts, which was formerly situated on the Santa Fe Indian School campus. This museum is one of the only two museums in the U.S., which are chartered by the Congress. The major attraction at the Museum is the Lloyd Kiva New Gallery, an art space housed in the Museum Store. This Gallery has been named after the founder visionary of IAIA. It is a great place to spot fresh art from budding talents in the enthralling area of contemporary Native American art. The main objective of the Museum is to endorse the understanding of its educational ventures.
The Museum has played an integral role in the historical advance of present-day Native art. The Museum helps the students and the public to understand and explore some of then most interesting and innovative works being created today. IAIA has become a primary center of cultural and artistic activity, and is a place well worth visiting.
