santa fe museum of fine arts

The Museum of Fine Arts, situated just off the northwest corner of the Plaza in Santa Fe, New Mexico, was established in 1917 as the Art Gallery of the Museum of New Mexico. This Museum is housed in a magnificent building designed in the Pueblo revival style by I. H. and William M. Rapp. The architecture of the building is a combination of several Southwestern regional styles, including elements of the facades of the Spanish mission churches of Laguna, San Felipe, and Acoma Pueblos. The Museum of Fine Arts has collected, exhibited, and interpreted several pieces of work by renowned artists from New Mexico and elsewhere.

The Museum is also a part of the Museum of New Mexico, a division of the New Mexico Office of Cultural Affairs. It aims at preserving and promoting the art and artists of the Southwest. The collection at the museum comprises of photography, sculpture, paintings, and paperwork primarily related to the American Southwest of the 20th and 21st centuries. The Governor’s Gallery, known for its rotating exhibits, is the outreach arm of the Museum of Fine Arts. It is housed in the Governor’s Office on the fourth floor of the State Capitol Building.

The major attractions at the Museum include the St. Francis Auditorium and the Jesus Bautista Moroles sculpture fountain in the central courtyard. The Museum hosts a number of exhibitions of contemporary art in all media, throughout the year. All the established and emerging artists are invited every year to participate in the juried competitions organized by the Museum. Besides, the Museum also hosts regularly scheduled slide lectures, gallery talks, and gala exhibitions openings. The Museum of Fine Arts is a charming home for a notable collection of 20th-century American art, highlighting mainly on New Mexico, the Southwest, and the Taos and Santa Fe masters.
