The Museum of Indian Art and Culture, situated in the Museum Hill District, in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, is dedicated to the diversity and complexity of the Native American cultures of the region. The Museum gives excellent opportunities to witness the development of new forms of art, explore and understand the contemporary lifestyles of the indigenous populations of the Southwest, and listen to the history of the Native Americans. Other popular museums located in its vicinity on the Museum Hill include the Museum of International Folk Art, the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art, and the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian. These four museums are included in the Museum of New Mexico system.
The Museum of Indian Art and Culture is situated just 3 miles (4.8 km) from the Downtown Santa Fe. It is, in fact, the best place to feel and experience the extraordinary balance and beauty of the different cultures of the Southwest. The Museum attracts over 65,000 visitors every year. It features public lectures, changing exhibitions, artist residencies, field trips, and other educational programs. The MIAC mainly aims at providing cross-cultural education to all those who take part in the programs organized by the Museum.
The exhibitions at the Museum mainly represent the contemporary and the ancestral cultures of the Southwest. The permanent, online, temporary and traveling exhibitions of the Museum help people to understand the Indian Cultures, which are not only complex and diverse but also vibrant and steeped in tradition. The main holdings of the Museum include the Art & Artifact Collections, the MIAC/Lab Archives, and the MIAC/Lab Research Library. The Laboratory of Anthropology further emphasizes on the research and education on the region’s indigenous cultures and their history.
