San Miguel Mission

san miguel mission

San Miguel Mission, situated in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is a Spanish Colonial mission church. Popularly known as the San Miguel Chapel, this church is the oldest one in the United States. It was constructed between 1610 and 1626. After the Church was mutilated during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, it was restructures in 1710. In fact, for a long period of time, the Church served as a chapel for the Spanish Soldiers. The most impressive feature in the Church is the wooden reredos, which includes the wooden statue of Saint Michael. This statue dates back to 1709 and was added to the Church in 1798. The huge, original adobe walls of the Church are still intact despite having been hidden by later additions. The magnificent San Miguel Mission is worth visiting. Mass is still held here every Sunday.
