Santuario de Guadaloupe, situated to the west of the Santa Fe Plaza in Santa Fe, New Mexico, was established in 1781. This historic Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe Church has now been converted into a history and art museum. The Museum holds a unique collection of New Mexican Santos by Archdiocese of Santa Fe. The other collections include the Mexican baroque paintings and the Italian Renaissance paintings. Our Lady of Guadalupe, one of the finest and largest oil paints of the Spanish Southwest, is one among the most treasured works in the Museum. This famous oil painting, signed by the renowned Mexican artist Jose de Alzibar, was created in the year 1783. It was brought to the Church by the mule caravan.
Santuario de Guadaloupe was established between 1776 and 1796. It is considered to be the nation’s oldest shrine that honors the Virgin of Guadalupe, the patron saint of Mexico. The adobe walls of this shrine are nearly 3 ft (0.91 m) thick. When the Church was renovated in the early 20th century, the deep-red plaster wall behind the altar was dyed with oxblood in a conventional manner. Over the past years, the architectural styles of the building have ranged from the flat-topped pueblo to New England town meeting and the contemporary northern New Mexico style of today.
