The Plaza, situated in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is the historical, geographical, and cultural center of the town. It serves as the end of the Old Pecos Trail, the El Camino Real, and the Santa Fe Trail. The Plaza is a popular gathering place for tourists and locals alike. It is ringed by a number of shops, museums, and restaurants. The main cultural events that attract people to the Plaza include the fiestas, art market weekends, political rallies, and parades. These are the events when the Plaza is filled with people eating, shopping, cheering, or merely watching each other.
The best way to experience the Plaza is to explore this vital downtown on foot. Vendors and businesses are tightly packed in the blocks surrounding the square, making parking really difficult near the Plaza. The most favorite activities on the Plaza include shopping at the Native American vendors along the portal at the Palace of the Governors, reading the modified inscription on the Indian War Memorial obelisk in the center of the Plaza, and enjoying the Frito pie at the Five and Dime. The Plaza is what makes the city of Santa Fe different and lively. It is certainly worth visiting when you have ample time to relax and freak out.
