History of New York

  empire state building

New York, situated in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern regions of the United States, has been named after the 17th century Duke of York, James Stuart. The state was first inhabited by the Lenape Native American, Iroquois, and the Algonquin groups. Henry Hudson, a Dutch voyager, was the first to claim the region in 1609. The region was colonized by the Dutch, particularly at Manhattan and Albany, in 1624. In 1664, the region was annexed by the British forces during the Second Anglo-Dutch War and was then governed as the Province of New York.

New York was the site of nearly 1/3rd of all the battle of the American Revolutionary War. It declared itself an independent state on July 9, 1776 and endorsed its own constitution in 1777. The last trace of the British troops in New York departed in 1783, as per the treaty of Paris. This day was long afterwards commemorated as then Evacuation day. New York became the 11th state to ratify the United States Constitution on July 26, 1788. The construction of the Erie Canal in 1825 exposed vast areas of New York to commerce and settlement, and facilitated port cities, such as Buffalo, to develop and prosper.
