Bismarck & Mandan

Bismarck-Mandan, a metropolitan area in North Dakota, comprises of the major twin cities of Mandan and Bismarck, many small nearby bedroom communities, and the small suburb of Lincoln. The cities of Bismarck and Mandan bestride the Missouri River. Bismarck, the capital of North Dakota, is the second most populous city in the state. Founded in 1872, Bismarck has been named after the German Chancellor, Otto von Bismarck.
The City of Bismarck is the prime center of retail trade, manufacturing, and health care in North Dakota. It is a major tourist attraction in North Dakota. It is home to the 19-storey North Dakota State Capitol, the tallest building in the state. The grounds of the North Dakota State Capitol also house the North Dakota State Library, the North Dakota Heritage Center, the Governor’s Residence, the State Office building, the Liberty Memorial Building, and the main Capitol building.
Other major tourist attractions in the city include the Kirkwood Mall, a major shopping center in downtown Bismarck; the Bismarck Civic Center; the Cathedral district; the Belle Mehus Auditorium; and the Arrowhead Plaza. Besides, there are a number of other shopping malls, restaurants, and stores in the city. Bismarck also features an extensive system of parks and exercise trails. The Bismarck Parks and Recreation District was established in 1927. It operates a number of swimming pools, golf courses, and parks, including the Sertoma Park, the Dakota Zoo, and the Super Slide Amusement Park. The most popular tourist activities in the city include hunting and fishing. The two major lakes in the city include the McDowell Dam Lake and Lake Sakakawea. Mandan, on the other hand, is the county seat of Morton County. It was founded in 1879 and is home to the North Dakota Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives. It is situated across the Missouri River from Bismarck.
