Devil's Lake

Devil's Lake, a freshwater lake in North Dakota, is situated between the Benson County and the Ramsey County in north-eastern part of the state. It is the largest natural water body in the state, and occupies an area of 216 square miles (559 sq. km.) at an elevation of nearly 1449 ft (442 m). Most of the southern shore of the lake is occupied by the Spirit lake Tribe. Devil’s Lake is the terminal lake of a 3800 square mile (9800 sq. km.) drainage basin. The Lake flows into the neighboring Stump Lake at an elevation of 1446 ft (441 m) and spills naturally into the Sheyenne River at an elevation of 1459 ft (445 m).
Popularly known as the perch capital of the world, Devil’s Lake has long been a favorite destination for a number of water-sports, including fishing. Several boat ramps and other facilities are available around the lake to facilitate recreational activities, such as open water fishing, ice fishing, and boating. A major tourist attraction on the southern shore of the Lake is the Sullys Hill National game Preserve. Other places of tourist interest nearby include the Grahams Island State Park, the Black Tiger State Recreation Area, and Shelvers Grove State Recreation Area. The recreation areas are now closed owing to undue flooding of the Lake.
Devils Lake, the county seat of the Ramsey County, North Dakota, has derived its name from the Lake. It was established in 1882. The major tourist attraction in the City is the Devils Lake Town and Country Club. It is also home to the North Dakota School for the Deaf and the Lake Region State College.
