Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park, situated 7 miles (11.2 km) south of Mandan, North Dakota, is home to the Custer House, the blockhouses, and the On-A-Slant Indian Village. On-A-Slant Indian Village was built in 1575 near the Heart River. This village had 75-85 earth lodges, each of which housed nearly 10 members of an immediate family of the Mandan tribe. The Village was the prime center of trading for the Mandan, who were best known for their ability to prepare animal skins and make pottery. The Custer House, on the other hand, was owned by Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer and his wife Libby.
The Park offers 40 minute long tours of the Custer House every half hour. 50 minute long interpretive tours of the earth lodges and On-A-Slant Village are also offered every half hour. The visitors are also permitted to walk through the blockhouses and the cavalry barracks. The State Park also features a historic Museum that holds several artifacts, photographs, and exhibits, illustrating the history of the Park. Besides, the Park also comprises of picnic shelters, 95 campsites, and 2 sleeping cabins. The main recreational activities offered at the Park include hiking, horseback tours, and fishing. The heritage and historic perspectives of Fort Lincoln State Park are maintained and promoted by the Fort Abraham Lincoln Foundation, a non-profit organization.
