Fort Mandan

fort mandan

Fort Mandan, situated on the Missouri River, 12 miles (19.3 km) from Washburn, North Dakota, was the main encampment at which the Lewis and Clark Expedition wintered in 1804-1805. This triangular-shaped fort was made of cottonwood lumber cut from the riverbanks. It was established on November 2, 1804 by the Corps of Discovery. The Fort was named after the nearby Mandan tribe’s village. The Fort had burnt to the ground when the Corps passed back through the area in August, 1806.

Today, an impressive replica of Fort Mandan stands along the Missouri River, just 2.5 miles (4.0 km) from the intersection of US 83 and ND 200A. It is situated 2 miles (3 km) from the North Dakota Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center on the Mc Lean County Highway 17. Fort Mandan also features a brand-new visitor center, picnic shelters, fully-furnished reconstructed Fort, and several walking trails. The Fort offers daily interpretation about fort life nearly 200 years ago.
