Fort Totten State Historic Site

fort totten state historic site

Fort Totten State Historic Site is a major tourist attraction in Fort Totten, North Dakota. Fort Totten is considered to be the best preserved military fort of the Dakota Frontier-era. It was initially constructed to watch over the surrounding Indian Reservation, after the Sioux tribe inhabited the area in 1867. Peace and guard transportation routes were enforced by the soldiers stationed at the Fort. The Fort was decommissioned in 1890 and was used as a Native American boarding school until 1959. Fort Totten was designated a State Historic Site in 1960 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

Today, the Fort Totten State Historic Site features an interpretive center and 16 restored historic buildings. The main attractions at the site include the Pioneer Daughter’s Museum, the Totten Trail Historic Inn bed & breakfast, and the Fort Totten little Theater. The famous ‘Fort Totten living History Field Day’ is hosted every year in September. Fort Totten State Historic Site attracts thousands of visitors every year and is a “must-see” in North Dakota.
