Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site

The Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site, situated one-half mile north of Stanton, North Dakota, can be accessed via US 83 and ND 200A. This historic site is just 20 minutes from Washburn and 60 miles (97 km) from Bismarck. It was authorized on October 26, 1974. It offers the visitors a glimpse of the early Native American life and aims at preserving the archaeological and historic remnants of the agricultural and cultural lifestyle of the Northern Plains Indians. The Site encompasses an area of over 1758 acres (7.11 sq. km.), featuring as many as 50 archaeological sites, which depict possible 8000-year span of inhabitation, ending with five centuries of Hidatsa earth lodge village occupation.
The major attraction at the Knife River Indian Villages National Historic site is the full-scale, fully furnished, earth lodge exhibit. This Hidatsa-style exhibit is open to the public from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The Knife River Villages also host the annual Northern Plains Indian Culture Fest in July. Self-guided tours of the site are offered by the Visitor Center. The 15-minute orientation film at the Visitor Center offers an aerial view of the earth lodge rings and narrates the story of the Hidatsa people that inhabited the area. The most popular tourist activities at the Site include bird watching, wildlife viewing, fishing, picnicking, and cross-country skiing.
