The North Dakota Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center, situated 38 miles (61.1 km) north of Bismarck, North Dakota, was established in 1997. The Center emphasizes mainly on the Lewis and Clark Expedition, particularly the time spent by them in the area, which eventually became North Dakota. Overlooking the spectacular Missouri River, the Interpretive Center is situated just outside the city of Washburn. The impressive reconstruction of Fort Mandan is merely 2 miles (3 km) from the Center.
Most exhibits displayed at the Center commemorate the heroic adventure of Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark through the great Northwest, during their expedition in 1804-1805. Many interactive exhibits help people understand the life in the early 1800s. The most impressive displays include Native American artifacts, a cradle board used by the Sakakawea people, a buffalo robe, and an authentic wood canoe carved from the trunk of a large cottonwood tree. The Center also features images by Karl Bodmer, a Swiss artist who traveled with Prince Alexander Maximilian of Weid to North Dakota in 1833. Several other exhibits illustrate the history of the state’s fur trade and early agriculture. Lewis and Clark memorabilia, books written by world-famous authors, and the internationally acclaimed artwork of Bodmer can also be purchased from the Interpretive Center.
The main galleries at the Interpretive Center include the Sheldon Gallery and the Bergquist Gallery. The Fort Clark Exhibit in the Sheldon Gallery depicts the history of the frontier trade, Native American culture, and the mighty steamboats. The Bergquist Gallery is one of the four galleries in the world to house a complete collection of Bodmer’s watercolors and Maximilian’s written descriptions. The Interpretive Center also hosts a number of cultural events throughout the year.
