north dakota heritage center

The North Dakota Heritage Center, situated on the grounds of the North Dakota State Capitol in Bismarck, North Dakota, is the official history museum of the state. It is managed by the State Historical Society of North Dakota. This facility encompasses an area of over 140,000 square feet (13,000 square meters), featuring exhibit galleries, storage and meeting rooms, and an office area for the Society. The most impressive permanent exhibits at the Center include The First People (9,000 BC - AD 1738); Bright Dreams and Hard Times (1915 - 1941); Settlement Period (1870 - 1915); and Era of Change (1738 - 1870). The temporary exhibits include a wide variety of documents and artifacts on specific themes, ranging from archaic to modern. The temporary and permanent exhibits are displayed throughout the building-in the foyer of the Auditorium, the Documentary Gallery near the Reading Room, the lobby, and the Mezzanine.

The main gallery houses many exhibits, which depict the story of human life on the northern plains. A buffalo wallow reminiscent of the time when the great beasts ruled the prairies, is yet another exhibit at the Heritage Center. The Orin G. Libby Reading Room at the Center holds the State Archives and an extensive collection of books, maps, newspapers, manuscripts, and photographs. The North Dakota Heritage Center also hosts several quality public programs every year. The auditorium in the Center features lectures, slide shows, films, and concerts. Visitors are also allowed to participate in workshops or sample ethnic delicacies.

The North Dakota State Heritage Center attracts all those who are interested in historic preservation, artifact collections, and archaeology. This Center holds the finest historical collections in North Dakota. Every exhibit at the center is a step into history. The Heritage Center Museum Store sells authentic handcrafted items, books and videos about the history of the state, and many other items related to the exhibits and programs of the Heritage Center. The impending expansion of the Heriatge Center will include climate-controlled storage areas, the “Corridor of History”, a café, a children’s gallery, and a 50-seat digital auditorium.
