The North Dakota State Capitol, situated in Bismarck, North Dakota, is the seat of government of North Dakota. The 19-storey tower of the State Capitol stands on a 160 acre (65 hectare) campus, which is also home to a number of other government buildings. The State Capitol building itself houses the legislative and judicial branches of the state. It is the state’s tallest building and one of the major tourist attractions in the state. The State Capitol grounds feature a number of parks, government departments, monuments, and walking trails. The original State Capitol Building was constructed between 1883 and 1884.
Today, the North Dakota State Capitol grounds are home to six main buildings: the North Dakota State Office Building, the North Dakota Heritage Center, the Liberty Memorial Building, the North Dakota Department of Transportation building, the North Dakota’s Governor’s Residence, and the main Capitol building. The main State Capitol building, popularly known as the Skyscraper on the Prairie, is a 241.67 ft (73.66 m) tall, Art Deco skyscraper. It houses the office of the Governor of North Dakota. The observation deck on the 19th floor of the building is the highest vantage point in the state. The North Dakota Supreme Court meets in the east wing, while the North Dakota Legislative Assembly meets in the west wing of the tower.
The Liberty Memorial building is the oldest facility on the Capitol grounds. It houses the offices for the tourism division of the North Dakota Department of Commerce, as well as the North Dakota State Library. The Department of Transportation building, on the other hand, is home to the central office of the state's transportation department. The North Dakota Heritage Center building houses the office of the North Dakota State Historical Society, which operates the Heritage Center Museum. Other attractions on the campus include the Myron Atkinson Park, the Capitol Park, and the Capitol Mall. Besides, the Campus also features the Arboretum Trail, the scenic prairie Trail, the Pioneer Family Statue, the All Veterans Memorial, and the Purple Heart Memorial.
