Painted Canyon, situated 7 miles (11 km) east on I-94, near Medora, North Dakota, is a wonderful example of nature’s purist beauty. It is as radiant and stunning as the name suggests. It offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape and greets its visitors with an array of brilliant lights in all colors of the rainbow. However, the intensity and range of the colors of the Canyon vary with time.
The Painted Canyon features a wide range of colors, including vibrant pinks, reds, purples, blues, greens, and oranges. The Painted Canyon Overlook also offers a panoramic view of the Badlands, a flat desert landscape broken by rock formations and petrified wood. The Viewpoint is open to the public 24-hours, from April to Mid-November. The journey to the Painted Canyon Overlook can be started in the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Hiking the Canyon is quite convenient and certainly worth it.
