Washburn, the county seat of McLean County, North Dakota, is home to a number of world-class cultural and heritage museums, tourist attractions, state parks, and national historic sites. The City of Washburn was established in 1882 and was made a county seat in 1883. It is often referred to as the ‘Grandest Little City on the Missouri’. The enchanting beauty of the Missouri River and the connection to Lewis and Clark's historic journey to explore the west allow the visitors to relive the past.
At present, Washburn is a city of over 1400 residents. It is home to several thriving businesses, excellent school systems, and historic churches. The City is also well known for the endless recreational opportunities, excellent quality of life, and good jobs that it offers. The major tourist attractions in the city include the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, Sakakawea Scenic Byway, McLean Co. Historical Society Museums and Lewis & Clark Mural, Lake Sakakawea State Park, the Garrison Dam, Fort Clark State Historical site, Downtown Washburn, Cross Ranch State Park, the Audubon Wildlife Refuge, and the Knife River Indian Villages State Historical Site. The North Dakota Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center emphasizes more on the Expedition's winter with the Mandans and features a full-scale replication of Fort Mandan and one of the expedition's canoes. Washburn has a lot to offer to both its residents and visitors.
