The Cherokee Heritage Center, a non-profit historical society and museum, aims at preserving the cultural and historical artifacts, traditional crafts, and language of the Cherokee Nation. Situated on the site of the mid 1800s Cherokee Seminary building in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, the Heritage Center is home to the genealogy research center. It also hosts the genealogy database for the Cherokee People. It is funded by the Cherokee Nation and is an integral unit of the Cherokee National Historical Society.
The Cherokee Heritage Center holds a unique compilation of historical documents, relics, cultural objects, and art work from the 1830s march on the Trail of Tears. The Museum also houses an extensive anthology of ancient artifacts from the Cherokee culture, from ancient to modern times. Besides, the Cherokee Heritage Center also features an impressive reproduction of a mid-1700s Cherokee Township, which is complete with various hunting techniques, traditional crafts, a traditionally built Cherokee Council Lodge, and religious and cultural practices. This Heritage Center was established in 1962 by retired Army Colonel Marty Hagerstrand. However, the present-day Center was dedicated and opened to the public on June 27, 1967. The Cherokee Heritage Center was founded primarily to promote economic development, together with cultural preservation.
