National Cowboy Museum

cowboy exhibit, national cowboy museum

The National Cowboy Museum, situated in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, holds the world’s most extensive collection of photographs, saddlery, American Rodeo, barbed wire, and early rodeo trophies. This collection features over 28, 000 American Indian and Western art works and artifacts. The Museum primarily aims at interpreting and preserving the rich cultural heritage of the American West, emphasizing particularly on the hardships of living and taming in the western US, and its influence on people residing there. During the annual Prix de West Invitational Art Exhibition and Sale, the Museum serves as an art gallery and attracts thousands of visitors from all around the world.

The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, formerly known as the Cowboy Hall of Fame and Museum, was established by Chester A. Reynolds, in the year 1955. The Chester A. Reynolds Memorial Award is granted annually to an institution or person, who has made significant contribution in the preservation of American West History and Heritage. Besides, “The Wrangler”, an authentic bronze sculpture by artist John Free, is presented every year, during the Western Heritage Awards, to the main creators of the winning entries in categories of film, music, television, and Western literature. The Museum houses three Halls of Fame, including the Hall of Great western performers, the Rodeo Hall of Fame, and the Hall of Great Westerners. It is also home to a 14, 000 square foot (1300.6 square-meters) original turn-of-the-century Western prairie town, known as the ‘Prosperity Junction’. During the Museum’s annual holiday open house, “A Night before Christmas”, this prairie town comes alive with historical figures.

The Museum features over 200,000 square feet (18,000 sq. m.) of display space, of which nearly 15, 000 square-foot (1393.5 square-meters) exhibit space is dedicated to the sculptures, portraits, and landscapes by the 19th and 20th century artists. The most impressive exhibits at the museum include more than 200 works by Frederick Remington, Solon Borglum, Robert Lougheed, and Charles Russell; more than 700 pieces by Edward S. Curtis; and nearly 350 from Joe De Yong. The main historical galleries at the Museum include the American Rodeo Gallery, the American Cowboy Gallery, and the Joe Grandee Museum of the Frontier West Gallery, the Native American Gallery, and the Weitzenhoffer Gallery of Fine American Firearms.
