Tahlequah

tahlequah city park

Tahlequah, capital of the Cherokee Nation, is located in the Cherokee County, Oklahoma. This city is also the capital of the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians. Tahlequah is home to the main campus of the Northeastern State University. The name of the city has been derived from the Cherokee word, “Ta`ligwu”. The City was established in the year 1839, when the Trail of Tears ultimately reached its end.

Tahlequah is home to a number of tourist attractions. The Cherokee Heritage Center, situated 3 ½ miles (5.63 km) south off US-62, features an impressive reconstruction of the 17th century Indian village, powerful audiovisual displays, and other arts and crafts demonstrations, which present the Native American culture with dignity. Other places of tourist interest in the city include the Elephant Rock Nature Park, the River City Players, the Falcon Floats, the Cherokee State Park, and the First Lutheran Church. The City of Tahlequah has an elegant Main Street but a pretty poor selection of hotels. The best hotels in the city include the Holiday Inn Express, the Tahlequah Motor Lodge, and the Restaurant of the Cherokees, which features an American-style buffet and the outstanding Cherokee Nation Gift Shop.
