The Tallgrass Prairie Preserve, owned and monitored by The Nature Conservancy, is situated in the Osage County, Oklahoma. The Preserve is managed using the natural forces that first created the prairies in the region. The common practices include grazing by herds of buffalo and controlled burns, which not only help renew the prairie but also keep trees and shrubs from encroaching. The Tallgrass Prairie Preserve is the world’s largest protected tract of remaining tallgrass prairie.
The Oklahoma Prairie Preserve features nearly 39,000 acres (160 sq. km.) of the original tallgrass region of the Great Plains, which stretched from Texas to Minnesota. Today, the Preserve is home to over 400 plant species and nearly 1,600 head of buffalo. Besides, the area has a wide variety of tall grasses, which grow to nearly 10 feet (3 m) in height. The Prairie Preserve is open both for hiking and driving tours. It can be accessed from either Hewins, Kansas or from Pawhuska, Oklahoma.
