Destinations Recreation State Map General Information Located in the Pacific Northwest, Oregon is the 9th largest state in the country by area. With Pacific Ocean forming the western border, Oregon is bounded by California, Idaho, Nevada and Washington in the remaining stretch. The state is divided into 36 counties. Salem is the capital city while Portland is the largest. Eugene, Gresham, Hillsboro and Newport are the other major destinations. Lewis and Clark expedition had set their foot in Oregon during their trail. The state is nicknamed as the Beaver State after the American Beaver which is the Oregon state animal. The most important industry is definitely the lumber and wood products industry followed by paper. The salmon-fishing industry needs a special mention for being one of the most flourishing sectors in the entire world. Sportswear and equipment giant, Nike, is headquartered in Portland. Pacific Ocean has tremendous influence on the climate of Oregon and the western part is especially damp while the central and eastern parts are relatively drier. Five major rivers that pass through the state are Columbia, Snake, Willamette, John Day and Klamath. Silver Falls State Park has attractive waterfalls while Crater Lake has an awesome scenic view. Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport is also a big draw from kids and adults alike. A must see destination is the expansive Crater Lake National Park, that holds the massive Crater Lake, the second deepest lake in entire North America. Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, Mount Hood, Oregon Caves National Monument, Bonneville Dam and Columbia River Gorge are other stunning attractions.
