Ashland

The city of Ashland is included in the Jackson County, Oregon. It is located in the south end of the Rogue Valley and 15 miles (24.1 km) north of the California border. It is merely 90 miles (144.8 km) from the famous Crater Lake National Park and the Oregon Caves National Monument. Ashland Mills, as it was called in 1855, was named after the Ashland County, Ohio and Ashland, Kentucky.
Home of the famous Southern Oregon University and the internationally acclaimed Oregon Shakespeare Festival, this beautiful city of Ashland is rich in natural beauty and cultural opportunities. Apart from the Plays featured by the OSF, there are a number of theatre groups in Ashland that present musicals, comedy and experimental theatre. Bluegrass, opera, chamber music, and folk singing are some of the offerings provided to the visitors.
The other attractions in Ashland include the National Fish and Wildlife Forensics Laboratory, Lithia Park, The Bathroom Readers' Institute and Bathroom Readers' Press, and the Ashland City Band. The National Fish and Wildlife Forensics Laboratory is a renowned crime lab that serves law enforcement within and outside the United States. Lithia Park, extending from the Ashland Creek to the foothills of Mount Ashland, is the “Jewel of Ashland”. It has a beautiful Japanese garden, 2 ponds, several tennis courts, a band shell, 2 public greens, and several miles of scenic hiking trails.
Ashland also has many forms of recreation to offer to its visitors. Mt. Ashland is a favorite spot for skiing, a popular wintertime sport. The Bear Creek Bike and Nature Trail runs along the Bear Creek and down the valley to Medford. This trail offer challenging opportunities to the bikers. Besides, there are jet boat rides and river rafting facilities on the Rogue and Klamath Rivers. Fishing for steelhead, trout, and salmon at the pristine mountain lakes is yet another favorite pastime in Ashland.
A daily shuttle bus is operated between Ashland and the Klamath Falls Amtrak station by the Oregon Transportation Department. From the station, one can board the Coast Starlight long-haul passenger train.
