Astoria Column

astoria column

The Astoria Column is Oregon's highest hill situated in the clearing atop, Astoria. It draws attention from all the people who come to see it. Watching the magnificent view from the top is a thrilling adventure for most of the people who come here. Entire city, mountains, forests, roads, ocean, and bay are clearly visible from this peak point of the city.

The Astoria Column was constructed in 1926. An expenditure of $32,550 was done to make this 125 feet (38 m) high column and the 164 steps going towards the top. While the view is simply great from the column's peak, it is also very appealing from the adjacent park. It is created based on the patterns of the Trajan Column situated in Rome.

The Astoria Column is considered as the world's unique large piece of commemorative architecture constructed with reinforced concrete with a graphical frieze in sgraffito practice.

The column artwork exemplifies the finding of the Columbia River done by Captain Robert Gray in 1792. The American establishment is claimed in the Northwest region, which tells about the triumph of the west and the advent of the Great Northern Railway. After almost 70 years of experience of coastal conditions and salty air, time had started for Astoria Column's unique artwork to attract people from all over the world.

By 1995, a lot of the pictures got worse almost to the point of invisibility. Astoria Column’s caretakers and the Astoria community worked hard to restore and protect the artistic nature of the column. Internationally famous specialists spent six months cleaning, renovation and repairing the images to their previous shine, and their complete work was disclosed in November, 1997.
